After much huffing and puffing we launched our own new web site design. Our previous design was four years old and was just a wee bit past it's best. We needed to put a new face on our business and that face had to be bang up-to-date.

The new design features a javascript based Slideshow at the top of the Home page and in the sidebar Project box. We selected javascsript rather than Flash for its ease of updates and because it renders (works) properly in the iphone/itouch/ipad environment.

On our portfolio page we wanted a better way to show off our website design work. We used the Lightshow system to make each portfolio link render in the middle of the browser and we made sure you can easily click to the live sites.

At the top of each page we added 'Get A Quote' which is our main call to action. Even in the short time the site has been live we have seem an uplift in the number of RFPs received so we know that worked.

Lots of good reasons:

1. It's fun and creative.

2. Search engines like them because they provide fresh content. For a new site they may even 'index' the blog first.

3. Site visitors and your clients like them because it gives then something new to read and they can add useful information in their comments.

4. They are either free or very low cost to set up and after that anybody can update them from a browser based admin area.

5. In a blog you can market a product or service, provide helpful information, and even present yourself as an expert (how am I doing on that one?).

I can hear you say 'but it will take too long'. Maybe. However, you can write long detailed posts or you can write quick comments which can be equally effective. It is your choice.
